Freedom From Want?

President Franklin Roosevelt outlined his four freedoms in a speech to Congress in 1941.  They include: freedom of speech and expression, freedom of every person to worship God in his own way, freedom from want and freedom from fear.

Freedom from want?  Freedom from fear?  Really?  How bizarre.

Did President Roosevelt actually believe that anyone can be free from want and fear?  What would be the point of that?  Life is all about wanting things and fearing things,  It's a struggle and without wants and fears, we would scarcely be humans.

His point, I presume, was to assure Americans that he was ready to invoke the power of the government to satisfy anything anyone ever wanted.  His version of government would provide whatever the citizens wanted.  His version of government would remove the fears from every American.  Government will provide for you and government will take care of you.

If that is what he thought our country was all about, he was gravely mistaken. Americans do not want to be taken care of, well, some do, but there are always anomalies.  America was not founded nor built upon those ideals.  Americans are self-reliant, self-sufficient and self-empowered.  We can take care of ourselves just fine, thank you.

Our current president is channeling Mr. Roosevelt and he also believes that Americans want to be taken care of.  Mr. Obama also thinks that he and his teammates in Washington can provide for all of those needs and do it better than we can ourselves.  Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit.

I still believe that most Americans want to provide for themselves and their family and to confront their own fears straight forward without government telling them how to act.  If I am wrong about that, the results will show up on November 6th.

Never in my lifetime has there been a starker choice, a more definitive difference in the two candidates than this year.  Want government to manage your life, vote Obama and the Democrats.  Want to manage your own life, vote Romney and the Republicans.

It's really very simple this election and we will know that answer from the people in just a few weeks.

I still believe that most people default to self-management than do to government control. This would portend a blow out for Mr. Romney.  If I am wrong, this will mean a slim victory for Obama.

I keep my fingers crossed every day.  I want my freedom, too.  Freedom from government, period!
